What does Placebo exactly mean?

I've been totally confused by this word, perhaps its meaning in English makes me feel faint.
Thanks for your explanation in layman's terms lol.

When people think they are sick and need to take medicine, but they actually aren't sick and need no medicine, doctors sometimes will give them a 'Placebo' that looks and feel like medicine.  And they really 'feel' better after taking it.  Obviously it is psychological comfort.

安慰劑的用意主要是在試驗中一組給予想要得知是否有療效的新藥或治療方法, 一組給予沒有療效的藥物或治療方法(即placebo), 來得知新藥或治療方法到底有沒有效(如: 因為心理作用可能也會造成療效)

Consider painkillers, which would definitely be affected by people's psychological effect. If the drug being tested is no more effective than the placebo (something that simply look like a drug but does not have any effective chemical), the drug is not useful.

When a new drug is developed, we need to test how well it works. So, we hold clinical trials.

In these trials, patients can sign up to test the new drug. However, if everyone is given the same drug, it is impossible to compare and see how the new drug works.

So we divide the participants into two groups, one taking the new drug, one taking a similar-looking pill with no physiological effect. This way we can compare the different results of the two groups to see if the new drug helps.

placebo is usually used in drug test
Two group of patient will either in treatment condition (drug) or non-treatment (no drug, probably given a Vitamin pills) condition. If non-treatment group showed a better treatment, it is considered as placebo because they were not given the drug but Vitamin. It is the mental misconception of drug (which actually is vitamin) that lead to better outcome.

At the most basic placebo is most often used in research studies to see if something new makes a difference or not.

For example.

In testing a new drugs efficacy. Group A gets new drug. Group B gets a lactose pill. Lactose pill is like dried milk, vitamins may be used but more often it is a lactose pill because you don't want the vitamins making a difference.

I would not associated placebo with any mental effect because placebo's may or may not have a guaranteed placebo effect (people taking lactose seeing a benefit) or placebo may also have the reverse (people thinking they go the drug feel they get more side effects when they only got lactose pill).

Just to clarify, a placebo group or a placebo-controlled group is "a term used to describe a method of research in which an inactive substance (a placebo) is given to one group of participants", in order to be compared with other groups (independent variable). This term is most often used in the context of a psychological or social experiment.

Placebo is something that has no effect. It is done in experiments where one group will be given a new medicine and another group will be given a placebo. Each group will not know what they got so the people doing the experiment can determine what effect the medicine will cause when it is compared to someone who didn't take the medicine.
